On this date in history in the year 1914, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, which was the event which started WWI. It became the deadliest war the world had ever seen, with new weapons and technology that killed millions of people.
We may not live in a world of peace, but as always, we can focus on our own choices. How do you handle disagreements or arguments with friends? How do you handle getting angry when a person on the other team cheats and the ref doesn’t see it? How do you handle it when your parents change their minds and life doesn’t seem fair?
We all get angry and there is often injustice in the world. As you get older, you have to figure out the balance between sticking up for yourself and not getting so angry that you jump into a fight. One way to start is to try and stop when you’re angry, take 10 deep breaths, and wait to respond. Usually the words we say in anger are hurtful–those are the ones later we wish we could get back.
A tender answer turns away rage, but a prickly reply spikes anger.
Proverbs 15:1 (VOICE)
Dear Lord, Help me tomorrow to quiet my anger, and wait to respond. Give me wisdom to know when to stand up for what’s right. Amen.
