Today was the beginning of Kwanzaa. Kwanzaa is a newer holiday which honors the African heritage, part of the African-American story. For seven nights, family members light a candle, and learn about the African principles that are valued in African culture. The seven principles are:

  1. Unity
  2. Self-determination
  3. Collective work and responsibility
  4. Cooperative Economics
  5. Purpose
  6. Creativity
  7. Faith

So today was unity. You may not celebrate Kwanzaa in your home, but the idea of celebrating family, community and culture is a wonderful thing. How can you create a tradition, or a moment in time to celebrate your family this week?

But Lord, your endless love stretches from one eternity to the other, unbroken and unrelenting toward those who fear you and those who bow facedown in awe before you. Your faithfulness to keep every gracious promise you’ve made passes from parents, to children, to grandchildren, and beyond.

Psalm 103:17 (TPT)

Dear Holy Spirit, Guide me this week. Help me to bring community and love together. Fill me with a spirit of gratitude and contentment. Amen.
