Today is… Reformation Day!! Whoo-Hoo!! Okay, fine, it’s also Halloween… but Halloween’s roots go back thousands of years, and the church did celebrate All Hallow’s Eve, or All Saints Day. Another fun fact about Halloween–it’s the second biggest holiday for spending. Americans are predicted to spend 2.6 BILLION dollars on candy this year, and 3.2 BILLION on costumes. And when your mom warns you about eating too much sugar, a kid would have to run around for 2 days straight to burn off the amount of sugar an average kid collects on Halloween…
So, maybe your family celebrates Halloween, maybe they don’t. It’s a weird holiday–the roots go back to some connection with the church, but it’s not unusual for parents to feel weird about having their kids dress up in horror costumes. God tells us in the Bible that the devil is real, and demons are too. But that doesn’t mean we should celebrate them. Understand that God is in control and that you have the power of God’s salvation in you. So there’s nothing to fear.
Yes, I am sure that nothing can separate us from God’s love—not death, life, angels, or ruling spirits. I am sure that nothing now, nothing in the future, no powers, nothing above us or nothing below us—nothing in the whole created world—will ever be able to separate us from the love God has shown us in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:38-39 (ERV)
Dear Lord, Thank you for fun days like Halloween. Help me to celebrate, but remember your truth in days like this. Amen.
