Good Trouble — July 25, 2020

In the news last week, US Congressman John Lewis died. Lewis is one of the Big Six of the Civil Rights movement in the 60’s, working alongside Martin Luther King Jr. Mr. Lewis fought for equality of all people since he was 18, and was one of the original Freedom Riders. One of his most famous sayings is that he would get into “Good Trouble”. He explained it once like this:

“It was about the way of love,” Lewis said. “We were beaten and arrested … and that comic book inspired me to make trouble. But it was the good kind of trouble.”

John Lewis, after being inspired by a comic book about MLK Jr.

Do you think there’s such a thing as good trouble? What about as a Christian? Another way Mr. Lewis described Good Trouble was that you “get in trouble, good trouble, necessary trouble. To make our country and make our world a better place.” Is there a time that Good Trouble is the right thing to do? I think so. What if you have to defend your friend, sister, mom? What if your teacher at public school says God doesn’t exist? What if you have to stand up for God? Think about all those protesters who got arrested–they were standing up for Black Lives, right?

Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.

1 Corinthians 16:13 (ERV)

Dear Lord, Thank you for strong examples and lives like John Lewis. Forgive me for not standing firm all the time, and for not knowing what to do. Give me wisdom, Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
