Even when we think we know something simple like number 3 of the 10 Commandments, we may not really read the whole thing.
7 “You must not use the name of the Lord your God to make empty promises. If you do, the Lord will not let you go unpunished.
Exodus 20:7 (ERV)
Most of us learn it as to not swear, and not to say “Oh my G–“, right? But it also means to not take it lightly, which in other words means to be very careful when using God’s name, just in a casual way. God’s name has power and needs respect.
Then I will praise your name forever.
Psalm 61:8 (ERV)
Every day I will do what I promised
But the last part of the commandment is about punishment–did you know that this is the ONLY commandment that says you’ll be punished? That is definitely some motivation to choose your words carefully. It doesn’t mean to be afraid to use God’s name. But treat his name with honor.
Dear Lord, forgive me. I’ve used your name carelessly without meaning to. Help me to learn to be more careful and respectful in the way I talk about you. Amen.
