May 10, 2020: Show Your Mom Some Love
So… if you didn’t know at this point that it’s Mother’s Day today… you may have some apologizing to do, so I’m hoping you at least said “Happy Mother’s Day” and gave your mom a hug. (if not–put this down and go do it right now… I’ll wait… ) While it’s a nice thing to get your mom a present, days like this are really more about paying attention to your mom (or dad for Father’s Day, or whoever’s birthday it is, etc). What I mean by that is — what would make your mom feel special today? She knows you love her, but does she know that you actually listen to her? If you made her dinner, what would she want? What are the things she talks about, the movies she likes?
One thing about growing up is that you need to stop thinking just about yourself, and you need to start being thoughtful toward other people. The first step? Really listen when they talk. Things they like, what are they struggling with, what brings them joy. Second step? How can you make those things happen for them, or how can you help them with things? YES, even if it is inconvenient to you.
In whatever you do, don’t let selfishness or pride be your guide. Be humble, and honor others more than yourselves. 4 Don’t be interested only in your own life, but care about the lives of others too.
Philippians 2:3-4 (ERV)
Dear Father, Thank you for my mom. Help me to make her feel appreciated today. Forgive me for taking her for granted, and for when I don’t listen to her or obey her. Amen.
