Today is National Day of Listening. Fun facts: research shows that people remember about 17-25% of what they hear, men use only half their brain when listening while women use both sides, also, if you listen to someone complaining for 30 minutes, it will actually make your brain not work as well, especially in problem-solving.
Being a good listener is harder than it seems–how often do you interrupt people when they are talking? Do you listen to people? Have you ever felt like people don’t listen to you? The National Day today is for you to find someone, like a grandparent, and have a conversation with them. Find out something new, ask them about when they were a kid. And listen.
God tells us to listen to others–many times in the Bible, the skill of listening is shown to be a good quality. Listening shows love and respect for the people around you. Work on listening to them today.
My dear brothers and sisters, always be more willing to listen than to speak.
James 1:19 (ERV)
Dear Lord, Give me ears that are ready to listen, and help me to not tell my own stories as much. Amen.
