Smell-o-vision : June 5, 2020

Have you read the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? You may not remember, but in it, one of the inventions that Willy Wonka is working on is food you can smell and taste through your television–he calls it smell-o-vision. Well, in the news this week, it sounds like scientists are getting close to it in real life–they created a gadget that tastes like all sorts of foods–by pressing it to your tongue. It has gels for salt, sweet, bitter, umami, and acidic, which are the five basic taste bud senses. You can change the amounts to make it taste like gummy bears, or maybe…steak? Who knows? But the inventors say the next step is to make it where you can taste things you see on tv or on the internet… smell-o-vision!
Tasting things you don’t have in front of you, sounds like believing in things that you can’t see–which is like Christian faith. We believe in God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, not because we see them, but because we have faith and know it to be true. We serve the true God, who is faithful, just and merciful. And who is always good, and who remains the same over all the generations.
So we think about what we cannot see, not what we see. What we see lasts only a short time, and what we cannot see will last forever.
2 Corinthians 4:18 (ERV)
Dear Lord, help my faith to grow stronger in you. Forgive me when I get confused about how faith works. Thank you for salvation. Amen.
