Today is National Weed Your Garden Day. Fun fact–did you know that in 1941, George de Mestral was hiking with his dog and came home covered in burrs–you know those things that come off of weed that are really prickery? He looked at them under a microscope, noticed that they were like hooks which made them so sticky, and got the idea for Velcro– which he invented.

Weeding your yard is hard work. In the Bible, God compares some of us to weeds–the story of the sower shows us that God’s word doesn’t always take root and grow. We need to watch out for things in our lives that crowd out God–whether it’s fun things like video games, friends, hobbies, or just laziness.

Other seeds fell among thorns that grew up and choked out the tender plants…22 The seed that fell among the thorns represents those who hear God’s word, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this life and the lure of wealth, so no fruit is produced.

Matthew 13:7, 22 (ERV)

Dear Lord, help me to create room for your word to grow in my heart. Make my heart ready for you. Amen.
